Conceptualization and Design
Let us start to learn how to make a stuffed animal by having a character concept. Decide a reference character then search for its photo. If you want to start with easy to make stuffed animals, we suggest that you choose a character with a flat shape and/or with minimal parts. A starfish would be a good idea.
Next, in a piece of paper, draw a pattern of all its parts – from the head, nose, arms, to the lower limbs. Include in the detail where these different parts will have their attachment point.
Then, get a pair of scissors and cut-out the paper patterns you made.
Alternatively, you may also look for a pre-made pattern in the web. You can print these drawing straight ahead or adjust the scale.
Tracing the Pattern
Now, it is time to make use of the paper pattern on a real fabric. If you want to practice first, you can do the next steps on a trial fabric and make a prototype.
Fold the trial fabric in half facing right, then lay it down flat on a table. Pin the pattern pieces then trace. Use tailor’s chalk or a water-soluble pen.
Sew the pieces together. Start by closing the seams facing right. Bear in mind that you must keep one side open.
Time to create the volume of your animal in learning how to make a stuffed animal. Turn the piece inside out through the opening that you left. Stuff the animal tight with polyester fiber fill or wool while shaping it as you go.
Tip: legs and tails are usually cylindrical, so they require only one seam around the edges to close off the limb. Use a pen or any blunt end of a stick to push more fillings in. Do the same for other parts if necessary.
If at this point, you find that the shape that you are making is not you want, this is the perfect time to correct it. Turn the fabric inside out again, then make tucks and darts as you wish. Turn it inside out again once you are finished and start the filling process again.

Complete your stuffed animal. Attach the pieces together as you have conceptualized it. Connect the limbs to the body, and the body to the head. Assemble them together to make it a whole.
